⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Calypso
Age: N/A
Canon: Percy Jackson || Heroes of Olympus || Trials of Apollo || Greek mythology (historically)
Canon Point: End of 'Trials of Apollo: The Dark Prophacy'

Background: • http://www.theoi.com/Nymphe/NympheKalypso.html– This is the mythological base of Calypso. While the author was very accurate to the myth of Calypso, there are some deviations from the myth that can be observed in the below link.
◦ Please note that the author has never elaborated on the offspring of Calypso and Odysseus are cannon for his series. Calypso is immortal and can most likely appear as any age she wishes. It is incredibly likely that Calypso did, in fact, mother children of Odysseus but it has never been revealed.

http://camphalfblood.wikia.com/wiki/Calypso – This is a book cannon website which is more fully accurate to her portrayal in the books.

Personality: Calypso is a kind and loving woman. Even though she has been punished by the Gods for her involvement in the first Titan she can still find good in the people who have punished her. She still helps those sent to her island and even falls in love with them even though she knows that they will leave her. Calypso still sees the Gods as the better choice even though they have doomed her to her fate; she is still intent on supporting them through the second Titan war and the war with Gaia. She even goes as far as to send Leo off her island alone so that he can have the best chance of success rather than trying to go with him and possibly dooming him and the world to death.

Calypso doesn't go halfway on anything. When she is caring for someone she will care for them with her whole being, when she loves them she will love them deeply and the heartbreak at them having to leave her is painful and permanent. Even when she finds a new love she does not forget the old one and continues to love them. It isn't that the old love is a lesser love, it most certainly isn't; it is simply that the past love has just been relegated to the past rather than a current status. Her heart may ache for them, but it has become the dull ache of a memory and not the acute ache of an open wound.

Even with her kind and forgiving nature, she has her emotional limits. When she is betrayed she takes that pain within herself and can sometimes lash out verbally. She has no fear of questioning or arguing with the Gods, and seems to look at them as equals, not people to be feared. This is most likely because she herself is a minor goddess. While her ire can be raised when she is betrayed, she doesn’t take long to forgive and she won’t entirely take it out on innocent people. She may grouch and gripe at them, but she will always take care of them; no matter how much she refuses to admit that she is doing it.

Calypso doesn’t like being told what to do. She has a very strong sense of what is good and what is not. While she did support her father in the first Titan war she has since realized that it would not be beneficial for the Titans to be in the seat of power. As cruel as the Gods may seem they still try to care for the mortals, and she feels that is something that she needs to support. This is also why she refuses to support Gaia in her war, and why she refuses to leave with Leo when he offers to take her with him.

In the 'Trials of Apollo' books, she is seen as a very strong willed and decisive woman. She refuses to be on the sidelines while others fight. In fact, she is often times on the front lines even though she doesn't have physical might or training to be there. She's very clever and uses the skills she has in new ways to get things done (using her weaving skills to pick a lock).

Calypso is shown to be curious about the world she's just learning about. She wants to go to school and be a regular teenager. She wants to learn more about herself and those around her. The more she learns about the people in the world, the more she wants to learn more. She's even learned to forgive Apollo for being one the deciding factors to her not being released from Ogygia. In fact, she views him as a friend (even if she won't quite admit it).

Abilities: The only definitive list of magical abilities that Calypso possesses on the Wiki seems to be lacking several of her abilities, so I've compiled the list here. Calypso is a minor goddess, so it's really safe to assume that she has all of the abilities that a minor goddess would possess. For the purposes of this app, however, I will only use those that have been specifically or subtly displayed in the Percy Jackson books.

When Calypso left Ogygia she became mortal and her magical abilities ceased to function. In 'Trials of Apollo: Dark Prophecy' she was able to use her ability to call upon wind sprites (the wind). However, using this ability still takes a lot of energy from her.

• Magic
◦ Mental manipulation - Calypso can subtly manipulate the thoughts of others. Much like a siren or Aphrodite's gift of charmspeak she can cause people to suddenly want or need to do something simply by suggesting it.
▪ She uses this on occasion while Percy is on her island (She tells him that he is tired and suddenly he realizes that he is or she says that he seems as if he can’t keep his eyes open and suddenly he feels that way). It is also hinted in the Odyssey that she may have attempted to use this on Odysseus as well.
◦ Singing – Calypso can use her singing like a spell and cause things to happen with just her singing.
▪ This is demonstrated when Leo creates his seeing device and it doesn't work upon activation. Calypso suggests that he try a spell (specifically she says a musical invocation). When Leo mocks her suggestion she begins to sing. After her song is finished the mirror begins to work.
◦ Age (immortality/age manipulation) – It would seem that Calypso can be any age that she wants. Due to her nature as a goddess, she is immortal however as well as because of the magic of her island.
◦ Magic servants – It is unclear of these are wind spirits or if it is her own abilities, but she seems to have the ability to manipulate things to work for her. For example, the house on her island has all the chores doing themselves.
◦ Magical weaving – Calypso has a loom which she uses to make clothing on. She uses magic with her loom to create things such as nonflammable clothing and such.
◦ Foresight and hindsight – Calypso mentions that seeing the past and future is 'simple magic' implying that she can do both.

• Non-magic
◦ Calypso is an amazing gardener. On her island, she has an orchard and a beautiful garden... Both Leo and Percy comment on how beautiful it is. She tends to her garden by herself, so it is clear that she knows how to take care of plants without magic.
Personality: Tell us everything you can about how the character works. What are their quirks, reasons for thinking, habits, and flaws—basically we want to know not only how they act, but also why they act that way. You are free to use canon as examples, but be sure to explain why you are referencing the event.

Alignment: Peromei

Calypso tends to fall on the darker end of this alignment during her time on Ogygia. She has no hope of leaving the island and always knows that she will be left once she has fallen in love with the person who arrives there. These facts bring her pain and a hopelessness that she can barely express.

Once off the island and traveling with Leo she has a renewed hope for the future. While a practical woman, she has gained the hope of living a normal life. Of going to school and going on dates. Of growing old with Leo and of stopping the Triumvirate.

Sample 3
Calypso still didn't understand the strange phenomenon that was the physical manifestation of emotions in this world. It seemed more like some God's trick than an actual manifestation of the world itself. However, she had seen it first hand in the form of other's sparkling when they were happy or flowers bursting into bloom. For herself, she seemed to cause a slight graying of the areas she inhabited, at least for a little while. She wasn't sure why she was manifesting this sort of emotional outcome, but it certainly made her curious. Perhaps she could find someone that could explain it to her.
